If you also have skin problems, with some areas (especially the cheekbones) dry and sensitive, and the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) oily, then this article is for you. Combination skin requires careful care, otherwise it can turn into problematic skin. It's true, it's generally inherited genetically, but if you use unsuitable care products, the T-zone will become even oilier, favoring the appearance of pimples, blackheads, and even acne.
What are the causes?
As I said, combination skin is generally inherited from parents, but it can be created or worsened by hormonal imbalances, contraceptives, stress, or using unsuitable products. At the same time, the environment and lifestyle will always play an important role in maintaining healthy skin, so extreme temperatures, long and hot baths, excess sugar, or lack of adequate sleep can easily lead to sebum imbalances and the appearance of pimples. In addition, changing skincare products too often can damage the skin's protective barrier.
What does combination skin look like?
It presents excess sebum on the forehead, nose, and chin, while the rest of the face is dry. The pores on the forehead are larger than on the rest of the face. Occasionally you have problems with acne or pimples. Your hair is greasy at the roots.
How to care for combination skin?
Having different needs, depending on the areas of the face, these must be treated, of course, differently. We must minimize excess sebum and pores in the T-zone, and the dry areas must be hydrated more.
- Cleanse – Cleanse your skin properly every day, focusing on the T-zone.
- Tone – Choose a toner with neutral pH and containing denatured alcohol.
- Exfoliate – Choose a chemical exfoliant with BHA or AHA (BHA is oil-based, penetrates deeper into the skin to clean pores and is more suitable for oily areas, while AHA is water-based and is more suitable for dry or normal areas).
- Moisturize – Use a serum or a light-textured cream (preferably water-based) that does not block your pores.
- Use masks – especially in the T-zone, clay or charcoal masks are recommended as they deeply cleanse your pores and remove excess sebum.
Steps to follow in the morning
- Wash your face, focusing on the T-zone. Then use a foaming cleanser to deeply cleanse your pores.
- Use a micellar water
- Apply a hydrating cream/serum for the face and one for the eye area
- Use a sunscreen before applying makeup
Steps to follow in the evening:
- Wash your face
- Use micellar water to properly remove makeup
- Use a toner
- Apply a water-based hydrating cream/serum
Avoid
- Over-cleansing several times a day or excessive use of mattifying powders.
- Over-exfoliating your skin (no more than once every 2 weeks).
- Using silicone-based or overly rich products.
You can't change your skin type, but you can help it a lot. Pay attention to the products you use, food, and unhealthy habits.
